Dixon School Road Boulders Opening Event Report

A warm spring day at Dixon School Road boulders marked another access success for Carolina climbers! On Saturday, April 25th, Crowder's Mountain State Park opened access to the Dixon School Road boulders (DSR) with an official opening of the new Boulders Access Area of the park. The opening marks the first officially designated bouldering area in the N.C. State Parks system. N.C. State Parks Director Lewis Ledford spoke at the event, along with Mike Leonard of the Conservation Fund, representatives from S.C. State Parks, and a founding volunteer from the Friends of Crowders Mountain group. CCC and Charlotte-area climber-volunteers were recognized for contributing the information kiosk to the new area by Crowder's Superintendent Larry Hyde. The CCC got a chance to talk one-on-one with Director Ledford and State Parks Western District Superintendent, Tom Jackson, about climbing issues in N.C. State Parks. Later, climbers from North and South Carolina hiked up the hill and enjoyed the high-quality bouldering along the ridge.
