Inaugural meeting of the Friends of Chimney Rock State Park

The CCC has been informed by Superintendent Wallace that the Friends of Chimney Rock State Park will have their very first meeting on Thursday, March 1 from 6-8 PM at the Lake Lure Town Hall. We encourage all climbers in the area to make time to attend this meeting. Thursday will be a great time for us to turn out in force and remind the park as well as the local community that we are, after all, the root cause of CRSP's existence.

The town hall facility is at 2948 Memorial Highway, Lake Lure, NC.

Change in Park Hours at Rumbling Bald

Adrienne Wallace, the Chimney Rock State Park Superintendent, has asked us to remind everyone that beginning Nov 1, park hours will be changing at Rumbling Bald. This seasonal change is mandated their Division rules. The seasonal hours are 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM and will run through the end of February.

Also, Adrienne says that the rangers will begin locking the front gate at closing time. It will reopen daily at 8 AM.

CRSP Master Plan released

The Master Plan for Chimney Rock State Parks was made available for public release last night. The plan from a quick read through offers significant revisions of some of the more controversial topics concerning climbing in the region. It outlines a course of cooperation with the climbing community as well as a direction for future development and consideration of additional climbing opportunities. We appreciate the efforts of all who made their comments known and responded to help develop the perspective needed for this document. The CCC would like to extend a special thanks to Brady Robinson and Joe Sambataro of the Access Fund for support and guidance in crafting a response that provided a thoughtful response to the initial draft. The CCC also wants to thank the Park Planning staff as well as Superintendents Tom Jackson and Adrienne Wallace for their continued commitment to working with the climbing community and various other user groups to help develop this special resource in a balanced way.

Rumbling Bald Shuttle registration

Recently, a handful of folks have asked if they could volunteer their time and vehicles to help run a shuttle at Rumbling Bald. In order to make it easier to do so, we (Brian, our websmaster) have added a new feature to the website. Brian has added a tab (that says, "Rumbling Bald Shuttle") on the side of the webpage to help inform folks of those who will be shuttling and for approximately how long. When your info is saved it will post it in this section of the website.

If you would like to volunteer, please do so by clicking this tab. It will allow you to fill out some forms that will help people connect with you.

General Management Plan Coordinator:

CALL TO ACTION: Help Protect Climbing Access in Chimney Rock State Park

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources recently released a draft of the Chimney Rock State Park Master Plan for public comment until December 13. The draft plan is available online at www.greenways.com/chimneyrock_download.html.

Chimney Rock State Park includes the classic Rumbling Bald cliffline and boulderfield. In addition, the park includes or is slated to include several lesser-known, high quality cliffs such as Ghost Town, the north side of Rumbling Bald, Eagle Rock, Cloven Cliffs, and the cliffs of the Chimney Rock attraction. Some of these outlying areas have 20+ years of climbing history.

We have a very passionate group of climbers in the South East and your voice is largely valid in this fight. We are listening.
