Mountains Rep; Ron Funderburke, At-Large Member; Shane Messer,

PROCEEDINGS
Call
to order: Anthony
called the meeting to order shortly after 10 AM. With 9 folks attending,
a quorum of members was present.
Old
business: Previously
proposed changes to the bylaws were reviewed and approved
unanimously. Brian’s big revamp of the website revamp (incl. the
computerization of Asheboro passes) was noted as complete and very
successful. Anthony noted that we did receive some member feedback
regarding preservation projects.
- Additional hickory nut gorge areas
- The big knob at Pilot
- Sauratown
- Grandfather Mountain
- Jones Gap, SC
- Table Rock, SC
Most
of these areas were covered elsewhere in the meeting. Regarding the big
knob at Pilot Mountain, however, Marshall, our park system biologist contact gave us a detailed and compelling list of reasons for the closure.
While some concerns might be overcome, the National Natural Landmark designation seems the most difficult obstacle.
Treasurer's
Report: The
bank account balance and recent major contributions were reviewed, as well as a
breakdown of expenses and income for the year-to-date. Additionally
Anthony presented en estimate for expenses for the coming year.
2010
Calendars: Related
expenses, sales thus far, and projected sales were reviewed. The calendar was
predicted to be profitable. Also, additional retail outlets were noted
and various board members took the responsibility of contacting those outlets.
Membership
Report: Scott
reviewed current and lapsed membership numbers. He noted that many of the
lapsed memberships originated during the fund-raising drive for Laurel Knob.
Membership
Drive: Currently
successful membership drive efforts were noted:
- Weekly emails updates
- Asheboro access
- Press due to Rumbling Bald purchase
Additional membership drive ideas were proposed. Some of these were slated for action in the near future.
Area
Report -- Northern Mountains: Jessa, Anthony, and Zachary gave the Northern Mountains
report. Jessa stated that her goal for her current term, as area rep was a
kiosk at each of the main High Country climbing areas: Blowing Rock,
Grandmother, Ship Rock. Blowing Rock parking was discussed and remains an
ongoing issue during the best bouldering season. The BCC's recent
Adopt-a-Crag at the Dump was a success. It that more work could be done
there around the boulders and on the parking area. The parking area has
been disturbed by recent trash removal activities.
Area
Report -- Southern Mountains: Phil Hoffman gave the southern mountains report. He
stated that the Deep Gap trail, access for Laurel Knob, had been cleaned up by
Friends of Panthertown. A trail into Dillard Canyon was discussed, but was
deemed unnecessary as the best way in is via low angled slabs. It some point
reflectors should be added marking the places where the Laurel Knob connector
hits the Deep Gap trail and the Lonesome Valley superhighway. The Looking Glass
Trail was reported as a success and various Rumbling Bald issues were
discussed.
Area
Report -- Northern Piedmont: The Moore's Wall Adopt-a-Crag event was meagerly attended.
The park had climbers carry out trash left by a construction crew. There was no
new information regarding the Cook's Wall rebolting or Sauratown.
There remain only two lines that need rebolting on the north face of
Stone.
Area
Report -- Southern Piedmont: Tim Fisher gave the Southern Piedmont Reportt. The
Crowder's Adopt-a-Crag went well. Larry could not accept the harness but did
take our plaque for Land Manager of the Year. Tim also stated that it is okay for
climbers to walk to the Dixon School boulders on the road from the parking lot. Access to the Poplar Tent boulders is still problematic, but
explicit access will be pursued.
Area
Report -- Southern Piedmont: SC area rep has been added to website. Stephen is working
on the SC issues.
Ongoing
Issues: A few
additional areas were discussed. Included was Grandfather Mountain State Park. The park has not yet
entered planning. The Boone Climbing Coalition will be working with the
park when the time is right.
Rumbling
Bald/Cloud Property:
Anthony detailed the remaining issues of the upcoming purchase as well as a
fund-raising plan for loan repayment.
CCC Spring
General Public Meeting: A date was set four the next public CCC meeting. The meeting will
take place in Lake Lure, NC on Saturday, February 27th.
