December community event recap: We have an incredible community throughout the Carolinas. Thank you Black Dome for a wonderful Night at the Museum! Thank you Nate Draughn and Center 45 for a great Buckeye Knob fundraiser and film! Thank you Rock Box Bouldering for hosting Reel Rock, and thank you to the Triangle Rock Club for a great night with your members!
Climbing Fuels Conservation at Buckeye Knob: Thanks to the American Alpine Club for supplying a research grant to the CCC, we were able to hire two climber-biologists to conduct a biological survey at Buckeye Knob, to see which species we had saved with our purchase of that land. Richie Hum and Laura Boggess conducted the research this past summer. YOU can now join in the floristic fun and add to our species database found here at INaturalist
Access Fund rebolting grant for Sauratown/ Cooks: 70- ½’’ stainless bolts, 15 anchors, hangers and drill bits have been purchased to reequip the 1980’s and 90’s carbon steel rusties at both climbing areas. Jackals, 10d, and The Amazing Joe, 12b, at Sauratown were recently completed and many more will follow.
Rebolting database: Sauratown has been added to the database, you can monitor rebolting progress on the CCC website. Support the CCC! CCC volunteers have replaced nearly 500 bad bolts this year!
Sauratown: This beautiful cliff is now open until March; go enjoy it! We pay a $5000 per year lease to keep this access open. Special thanks to Tim Fry and Nora Darcher, whose wedding donations were gifted to the CCC in support of this year’s access. Reminder to leave your pups at home at Sauratown though. See photo above by Fixed Line Media of a Sauratown climber on The Fuguitive, 5.13a.
Moore’s Wall: NC state biologists that monitor falcon nesting throughout the mountain region have indicated that the scope the 2020 North End closure will remain the same as in past years. A major change from previous years is that trained volunteers will be allowed access to the closed area to occasionally monitor the possible nesting sites. These trained citizen scientists will report their findings back to the state biologist in an effort to influence when the closure is implemented and lifted, thereby potentially limiting the duration of the closure.
Pilot Mountain: 25 volunteers, spent 175 volunteer hours, building over 70 stone steps on the recently roughed in extension to the Three Bears Gully climbing access trail. Much of the old Grindstone trail was brushed in with fallen vegetation, as well. Thanks for all of your hard work volunteers!
Crowders, David’s Castle work: We want to thank REI for making it possible to opt outside! In 2019 REI awarded the Carolina Climbers Coalition a grant to repair badly eroded trails at the Practice Wall and David’s Castle areas. In November, over twenty volunteers came out for the first scheduled work day. Thanks to Joy Shuck from REI Charlotte for joining us, providing coffee, snacks, cool swag and lending a hand in what was a really fun day of stewardship, community building and climbing to boot! The next work day is scheduled for Jan? Please join us and thanks again REI! #REI #Optoutside
Looking Glass Rock work: Powered by a grant from Explore Brevard, CCC volunteers and French Broad River Academy students installed three bog bridges over a consistently wet section of the South Side trail.
Melrose Mountain work: Thanks to the help of B.R.A.G., we began work on the new access trail to this newly opened crag in Tryon, NC.
Protectors: Our Protectors Program is fueled by Nick Colquitt Art, Joey Henson Art, Rab, Scarpa, Petzl, and Ground Up Publishing. Thanks to these brands and artists, we raised $7500 for climbing access and stewardship in 2019. Thank you 2019 Protectors: Andy Thorsell, Lauren Mitchell, in Memory of John William Hudson, David Gilbert, Ashton Drew, John White, Mike & Bethany Claes, and Mark Peele. Stay tuned for our 2020 Protectors Program packages!
