Summer Climbing Beta: Areas to beat the heat. July forecast in the Carolinas is not always complimentary to climbing. BUT, here are some quick summer options for you of areas we have worked to open or maintain for climbing that are summer-friendlyish. See our climbing areas map for location and info.
- Little Bearwallow Falls (sport and mixed, slabby)
- North Side of Moore’s (steep trad)
- Hidden Valley (steep sport and trad, some rain protected)
- McKinney Gap Boulders (shady boulders at high elevation)
- Weaver Knob Boulders (shady boulders)
- Rocky Fork State Park (far left side shady mixed moderates)
- Looking Glass North Face (shady and rain protected trad, boulders)
- Eagle Rock (shady trad and sport and TR)
- Buckeye Knob and Barn Boulders (shady boulders)
- Stony Mountain Vineyard (shady boulders with a wine slushy close by)
- Whiteside and Whiteside Cove (big trad and boulders, some shady and rain protected).
Pilot Mountain/Hanging Rock: We are looking for motivated climbers who want to help coordinate trail work days starting in September. No experience needed, we will provide tools and training. Contact bmahoney@carolinaclimbers.org Carolina Climbing Museum: Take a look at the Carolina Climbing Museum website, filled with wonderful tid bits of Carolina climbing history. Better yet, go visit the museum in person at Black Dome Mountain Sports. CCC members receive a 10% discount off their retail items.
RRGCC Partnership: the CCC and RRGCC partnered for chainsaw skill development at the Red River Gorge. The CCC plans to partner with the RRGCC to host a class B sawyer certification in Pisgah Ranger District this September 17th. If you are interested in joining, there are slots open. This is free to CCC and RRGCC volunteers, with 6 available slots. RSVP to tcaldwell@carolinaclimbers.org. The minimum requirements are that you have at least 30 hours of experience behind a saw, have your own saw, and PPE. This is not a class for novice sawyers and you should be interested in volunteering afterwards for saw work on climbing areas in one of these climbing regions.

July 16, 9-10:30AM: Big Rock Area Naturaland Trust is hosting a road clean up of Nine Times Rd. Meet at the intersection of Nine Times Rd and E Preston McDaniel Rd near Big Rock, SC. July 30, 9-1:00: Pilot Mountain Trail Day Join us July 30th to steward a shady portion of the Ledge Spring Trail. We will focus our efforts on rock hardening the belay area under Butterfingers and On Edge as well as rehabbing trail between the Big Arete and Ground Up areas. Meet in the upper parking lot at 9am, keep in mind that if you are running late you might have to take the shuttle to the top. Aug 8: CCC on Tap at BlocHaven
