Access Updates

Asheboro, NC: The Carolina Climbers Coalition, Access Fund, The Conservation Fund, North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR), and the North Carolina Zoo are pleased to announce that the Asheboro Boulders at Ridges Mountain have been permanently conserved, with climbing access preserved. As of December 2023, the 134-acre tract comprising the Asheboro Boulders is now owned by the State of North Carolina under management of the Zoo. Decades of negotiations and partnerships safeguarded this unique climbing area, preventing potential destruction for mineral extraction. The Conservation Fund's pivotal role, along with CCC's persistent efforts, led to this landmark conservation victory by NCDNCR. The Asheboro Boulders boast over 200 boulder problems on high quality gabbro formations, offering climbers a unique experience. Climber access now requires a daily reservation, ensuring sustainable use of this cherished resource.  Join us in celebrating this win for climbing and conservation!

Access Updates

Rocky Fork State Park, TN: We have confirmed new climbing access opening soon! In partnership with Rocky Fork State Park (RFSP), we are thrilled to announce that the Black Stack Cliffs will soon be open to public climbing! Featuring moderate traditional routes up to 100' tall in a beautiful riverside setting, Black Stacks offers over 20 routes rated 5.6 - 5.11. Our collaboration with RFSP began in 2015, leading to the opening of White House Cliffs in 2020, supported by the Access Fund and Trango Climbing. Thanks to your voices and ongoing support, climbing access at RFSP continues to grow. This achievement showcases how climbers, park officials, biologists, support groups, and gear manufacturers can work together to celebrate and preserve our public lands sustainably. Located just 35 minutes north of Asheville and 30 minutes south of Johnson City, TN, RFSP is a must-visit destination for climbers.
