Grayson County Recreation Park

Area Rep: Paul Klem pklem@carolinaclimbers.org

The Park: Grayson County Recreation Park is located just outside of Independence, VA. Independence is just a stone's throw from the NC border, and less than an hour drive from the Winston Salem region. The Recreation park has football and baseball fields, a pool, waterfall, trails, and boulders.

The Boulders: Each boulder is a 1-5 minute walk from the parking area. There are about 10+ quality boulders in the park, with potential for roughly 100 problems. The boulders offer a lot of variety, but many will need cleaning and most boulder problems are yet-to-be-established. V0-V7 currently. Click here for problem info. Please add to Mountain Project if you climb some new ones!

Parking From US 58 & 221 in the town of Independence, Virginia, turn onto Nautilus Way then take a right at the next stop sign onto Powerhouse Rd. From here drive down Powerhouse Rd until you see the right-hand turn into County Park Ln. Park in the Pool Parking Lot, or park by the bathrooms and playgrounds close to the overlook.

CCC's Work Here: Big thanks to former CCC board member, Sean Barb, for highlighting this area, as well as local climber Zeke Phipps for beginning bouldering development. Central Appalachian Climbers Coalition also set a nice foundation of access with early conversations with land managers and climbers.  CCC members met with Grayson County Parks Management in 2025 to confirm collective stewardship and climbing access goals for the park. Stay tuned for trail and stewardship days to serve this great area!
