Cedar Rock Trail Updates
Cedar Rock Climber Access Changes at Butter Gap: Pisgah Area SORBA recently spearheaded a major rerouting of the Butter Gap Trail, causing some nice improvements to sustainability, as well as some minor changes for climber access. Changes for climbers are listed below.
North Cedar: From Butter Gap (pictured) take the new Butter Gap Trail for just a few minutes until it leads to a knoll with the unmarked old Art Loeb Trail on your right and a nice camping spot as marked on the map. Once here, look for the faint unmarked climbers path on the left leading in the direction of North Cedar. There is often a peregrine falcon notice posted on a tree at this turn but not always. Please respect peregrine falcon closures.
Stone Depot and Halloween Slabs: From Butter Gap (pictured) take the new Butter Gap Trail for just a few minutes until it leads to a knoll with the unmarked old Art Loeb Trail on your right and a nice camping spot as marked on the map with a triangle. Take the old Art Loeb Trail sharply uphill and into the goat scramble. After the scramble, hike a few minutes and look down and right for the Halloween Slabs or continue up for maybe 10 minutes to the base of Stone Depot. Routes will be on the left for Stone Depot.
